Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA) is considered an emerging contaminant of high concern. BPA is of global concern due to its disruption of endocrine systems and ubiquity in the aquatic ecosystems. The difficulty of removing emerging contaminants, including BPA, in sewage treatment plants and water treatment plants, represents an important barrier in the control of these compounds in aquatic environments. In this scenario, an important issue does not investigate is the change in BPA toxicity to aquatic organisms resulting from the removal of the compound by a low-cost alternative adsorbent compared to a commercial adsorbent. The seed husk of the Moringa oleifera plant is considered a low-cost adsorbent. The present study will aim to evaluate and compare the toxicity of BPA, in solution and environmental sample, to two tropical freshwater organisms (midge Chironomus sancticaroli and Ceriodaphnia silvestrii), before and after the process of adsorption of the compound using M. oleifera seed husks and commercial powdered activated carbon. Changes in life cycle parameters (survival, growth, reproduction) of the tropical invertebrate as affected by bisphenol A will be investigated. The present project will contribute with information on the toxicity of BPA to tropical aquatic organisms and the efficiency of natural materials in removing that contaminant from aquatic systems.
