Study of the Dynamics of Light Heavy-Ion Reactions with the use of Beam Pulsing System at the University of Sao Paulo Peletron Accelerator

Abstract

We intend to investigate at the University of São Paulo Pelletron Laboratory the dynamics of nuclear reactions by employing techniques which allow the precise determination of mass, atomic number, energy and angle of the reaction products. In the last three years, a lot of effort has been put into the construction of a large multipurpose scattering chamberand several detectors for gamma rays (BaF2 detectors) and charged particles (multiwire position sensitive detectors and telescopes with gas, Si and Csl detectors). In order to complete the apparatus for obtaining more information about the reaction products, we are proposing the construction of two large neutron detectors consisting of cells filled with liquid scintillator and coupled to photo multipliers at each extremity. With this geometry, one can determine with precision the energy and position of the incident neutrons which can also be discriminated from gamma rays by means ofthe pulse shape discrimination technique.
