Abstract

This research project aims to understand and describe the relationships between physical education practices and representations of youth and elderly in a specific period of the slow political reopening of the Civil-Military Dictatorship, from different editorial lines of newspapers of the São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, between 1969 and 1988. Our central hypothesis to be analyzed deals with the many appropriations of practices by multiple social groups, also marked by age. Thus, the particularity of Brazilian modernity, through conflicts and conciliations in the political field, would also have been based on physical education practices considered socially appropriate. These practices were encouraged and propagated by certain representations about youth and aging, claimed in pedagogies, services, products and as public policies for education and health. In methodological terms, the analysis of the documents will have a theoretical approach identified with the new cultural history. So, we will use the concept of struggles of representations, having as sources the mainstream press through the principal newspapers and alternative publications organized in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
