Abstract

In recent decades, the debate about the well-known myth of eternal youth and consequent beliefs and actions around the denial of aging was intensified. In addition to the numerous consequences for social life, this dynamic is a challenge for the increasing of longevity scenario. Objectives: to investigate and compare, in the context of informal education, how the appearance of brazilian and spanish octogenarian is built for social engagement. Justification: combat myths and encourage heterogeneity in old age, in addition to understanding the potential of variable appearance for the management of old age and aging. Method: qualitative research, exploratory and descriptive, guided by the ethnographic method. Using techniques: free and participant observation, informal conversations, in-depth interview, documentation and photographic record. Use of field notes and a semi-structured guide. The participants will be: 1) brazilian and spanish octogenarian women; 2) residents of the cities of interest, most of life; 3) participating in community life; 4) housewives in old age; 5) with low income and education; 6) without cognitive impairment. Data will be collected in São Paulo and Madrid, especially in the house of the participants, which will be located in living centers for the elderly. Ethical issues: use of Terms of Consent. Survey and literature review: use of databases at the University of São Paulo (USP), in particular Ageline.
