3R'S AND VENOMICS: EVALUATION OF AN ALTERNATIVE IN VITRO METHOD TO THE USE OF ANIMALS IN THE STUDY OF SNAKE VENOMS

Abstract

The aim of this proposal is to develop a new France-Brazil collaboration to tackle the urgent need to strengthen the implementation of the 3Rs principle (Reduce, Refine and Replace) within the Instituto Butantan, São Paulo, the largest immunobiologicals and biopharmaceuticals producer in Latin America and one of the largest in the world (e.g. world-renowned for its developments of antivenoms), using advanced methodologies based on "omics" methods developed by CBMN, UMR CNRS 5248. This project will develop new frontier analytical technologies for the time-resolved study in order to replace in vivo tests by in vitro ones in the study of snake venoms. The outcomes of this project will be considered first to provides a more detailed analysis the protein content of venom pools used for antivenom production in order to better understand the mechanism responsible for the venom lethality, which can gives us tools for in vivo replacement method, that could be further deployed then in the functional tests of the ongoing FAPESP project "Evaluation of alternative in vitro methods to the use of animals for in vivo tests in the study of snake venoms: Principle of the 3R's (FAPESP 2021/11707-4)". This FAPESP-CNRS project will be as well complementary to further developments focusing on the development of new therapeutic compounds through studies of snake venoms and the impacted plasma proteins (ANR-FAPESP project call 2023, 1st stage submission letter submitted the 7th Nov. 2022, previously approved at Brazilian side, and the submission to the 2nd evaluation stage in March 2023, waiting for the final result).
