Orange essential oil as additive for feedlot beef cattle

Abstract

The present study aims to evaluate the use of orange EO in feedlot cattle diets. Two studies were proposed. Exp. 1: 36 Guzerá steers, with an initial body weight of approximately 350 kg will be used. The experimental design will be randomized complete blocks. The experiment will last for 120 days, the first 15 days being used to adapt the diets containing high concentrate content, and 105 days offering the final diet. The treatments used will be: Control, diet containing 88% of concentrate, with high inclusion of ground corn (diet with high starch), without the addition of additives; OEL: control diet with the inclusion of 1000 mg of Orange EO. Animal performance, ingestive behavior, net energy of the diets, carcass traits, meat lipid profile, parameters of rumen and cecal fermentation (post-mortem) and microbiology of the rumen and cecum will be evaluated. Data will be analyzed using SAS 9.4. Exp. 2: 36 Guzerá steers, will be used in randomized complete block design. The experiment will last for 120 days, the first 15 days being used to adapt the diets containing high concentrate content, and 105 days consuming the final diet. Control, diet containing 88% of concentrate, with high inclusion of dry distillery fiber with soluble (DDBS - diet with low starch), without the addition of additives; OEL: control diet with the inclusion of 1000 mg of Orange EO. The same parameters described in Exp. 1. For statistical analysis of the data, the statistical package SAS 9.4 will be used. (AU)
