Environment- Health- Ecosystem Services Nexus- from risk to adaptation and resilience

Abstract

Introduction: This proposal addresses the lack of an integrated watershed management approach that conciliates the management of ecological resources and ecosystem services, public health and well-being needs, and socioeconomic development. This integrated approach is needed to subsidize the preparation of necessary adaptation plans to address the risks related to climate change. Objective: to deepen and innovate the production of knowledge and training of people in the governance of environmental risks issues and elaboration of adaptation plans to climate change, through the construction and analysis of scenarios. The proposal will support adaptation plans and the transition to sustainability in which the health and well-being of the population are one of the central elements in the management of watersheds. Method: The project proposes the construction and analysis of scenarios, using the Soil & Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) software for an integrated analysis of the intrinsic relationships between water resources, land use, climate and climate change that will serve as the basis for the analysis. of the environment - ecosystem services - socioeconomic development - health and well-being nexus. The study area will be the Sorocaba-Medium Tietê Watershed. SWAT is a widely used watershed scale analysis model. The project also proposes co-construction with the involvement of the various actors who work in the management of natural resources, both at the local and state levels. Expected Results: In addition to publications of scientific articles and training, it will be a pilot model of evidence-based decision support, to be applied in the management of watersheds, allowing the integration of data on water availability, water quality, climate change, ecosystem services, and socioeconomic demands. It is expected that this model consolidate structural changes in the governance of natural resources and their relationships with socioeconomic development and ecosystem services. (AU)
