Abstract

Early childhood, which spans from birth to age six, has been gaining increasing attention in research across various fields and is considered a "window of opportunity" since this is the most critical period of human development. The book "The Science of Early Childhood" addresses cutting-edge topics related to this stage of life, starting with a discussion on the effects of inequality and poverty, and offering a comprehensive overview of the factors that influence child development, including biological, psychological, social, and environmental aspects. The book delves into subjects such as epigenetic plasticity and its relationship with sleep and nutrition; cognitive stimuli, affection, and emotional security provided by positive parenting, and how these factors directly impact brain development. Additionally, it examines the role of public policies, such as early childhood care programs and education, and the importance of early interventions in mitigating the effects of adverse conditions to which many children are exposed. The book brings together contributions from renowned specialists in the field, affiliated with the Brazilian Center for Applied Research on Early Childhood (2019/12553-0), based on studies conducted by these researchers. Throughout the work, scientific evidence is presented that underscores the importance of investing in early childhood as a way to promote equal opportunities and long-term well-being. The main goal of "The Science of Early Childhood" is to disseminate cutting-edge scientific discoveries, with a focus on Brazilian experiences, to a broad and diverse audience, including professionals from various fields, parents, educators, and policymakers. Its accessible and informative language aims to facilitate the application of this scientific knowledge in different contexts, ranging from public policy development to early childhood care. With a multidisciplinary approach, "The Science of Early Childhood" stands out as a groundbreaking work, with plans for translation and dissemination in other Latin American countries. It serves as a fundamental tool for those committed to turning scientific knowledge into practical actions that can ensure a promising future for the next generations. (AU)
