Abstract

The Bulletin 100 System is an institutional program of the government of the state of São Paulo that has provided farmers with soil fertility management tools for best decisions for more than 40 years. This System is made up of a network of around 170 soil analysis laboratories and a publication organized by the Agronomic Institute (IAC): "Bulletin 100: fertilization and liming recommendations for the State of São Paulo" (B100), whose printed edition 2022 presents recommendations for around 130 crops, consolidated from research and work of more than a hundred experts. The objective of the Smart B100 Advanced Research Center (CCD-SB100) project is to build a B100 digital platform, named Smart Bulletin 100 (SB100), incorporating scientific knowledge in environment and soil and plant biology with cutting-edge generative artificial intelligence technologies, such as the ChatGPT language model. The project has three pillars to achieve its objective: (i) build an advanced interface between agronomic knowledge and the SB100 digital platform, (ii) create multi-criteria decision indices to increase the efficiency of using fertilizers and bio-inputs, and (iii) transform research results and data, collected from researchers and agribusiness actors, into increasingly precise agronomic recommendations. In addition to physical-chemical attributes, SB100 will incorporate information on the microbiological quality of the soil, carbon cycle processes and knowledge regarding physiological responses and gene expression of plants, to recommend the use of inputs. The SB100 will represent the new generation of B100, supported by scientometrics, which will initially be validated for sugarcane and citrus crops, and later for other crops of economic interest. SB100 will be developed using a Large Language Model (LLM), based on a curation process that will select information from banks of scientific articles available to the public with CAPES, Pubmed, Research Gate, Scopus, WoS, repositories and others. This information will be accumulated in a database, vectorized and accessed by a computer system, based on AI technology. The scope of SB100 is supported by the National Fertilizer Plan 2050, which seeks to save on importing fertilizers into Brazil. The expected results of the project are: (i) provide more assertive and safe recommendations for managing soil fertility and the nutritional status of plants, (ii) provide tools to increase the efficiency of input use, (iii) accelerate the production and transferring of scientific knowledge from academia to farmers, through efficient, profitable, and environmentally sustainable processes (iv) promote the culture of digitalization in the field with digital inclusion of farmers. SB100 aims to transform current research into an integrative model of efforts and areas of knowledge, providing broad and assertive solutions via machine learning, developing the bases for modeling a Living Lab and an On-Farm Experimentation (OFE) system.
