evelopment of Tetrapyrrolic Macrocycles in Bioinorganic Chemistry and Photobiology: Synthesis, Characterization and Application as New Advanced Materials in Photodynamic Therapy and Photoinactivation of Microorganisms

Abstract

The project presented here for this FAPERGS/FAPESP call is directly connected to the research lines that have been developed in the Bioinorganic and Porphyrinic Materials Laboratory (LBMP) at UFSM and in the Photoinduced Processes and Interfaces Laboratory (LPFI) at IQ-USP in recent years and which seeks to combine advances in porphyrin chemistry, especially new compounds with biomimetic and biomedical properties, with the state of the art in bioinorganic chemistry and photobiology for the development of new functionalized molecules intended for applications in the area of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT).Specifically, in the present project, we intend to use and generate new synthetic derivatives of porphyrins (porphyrins and/or corroles), containing specific units or with peripheral coordination compounds that have the ability to form new compounds - Figure 1. These molecules could be used not only in PDT, but will also be key molecules in several studies in the areas of inorganic, bioinorganic, medicinal and photobiology chemistry. (AU)
