EMU: Multimodal system for neural activity recording for assessing brain function

Abstract

Electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) are techniques for investigating brain function non-invasively, which individually offer high temporal resolution (EEG) or greater spatial resolution (fNIRS). In this way, the combination of EEG with fNIRS not only overcomes the individual limitations of each technique, but also creates an important experimental approach for the integrated analysis of multimodal EEG-fNIRS data. Furthermore, compatibility with non-invasive TMS brain stimulation makes it possible to expand multimodal application to a controlled stimulation context, focusing on inter- and intra-individual variability of the neural response. The present project requests the acquisition of a system for the simultaneous acquisition of electroencephalography signals and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (EEG-fNIRS) compatible with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) protocols, in order to complement the implementation of existing and approved projects by FAPESP, expanding its contributions to Brazilian science at international context. The interdisciplinary team, proponent of this project, has studies of international impact using unimodal techniques. Thus, the acquisition of an integrated EEG-fNIRS system compatible with TMS makes it possible to combine existing knowledge and has the potential for greater impact and scientific relevance. Furthermore, as multi-user equipment (EMU), it will also be available to the scientific community outside the host institution, Cognitive Neuroscience researchers who will have the opportunity to work with the closed-loop system.
