Acoustic performance in icon buildings of the Brazilian Modernist Architecture, in São Paulo city, produced between 1930 and 1964

Abstract

The research proposal aims to analyze the acoustic behavior in urban spaces in the city of São Paulo, to expand the understanding of the interrelationships between acoustics and other areas of environmental comfort. The research seeks to go beyond quantitative approaches to environmental performance, integrating a critical architectural perspective and proposing design guidelines for the acoustic adequacy of environments. With a scientific approach, the study aims to contribute to Brazilian technological and scientific development in knowledge. The purpose is for future architects and urban planners to consider, from the conception of projects, the importance of acoustic comfort and the compatibility between the different areas of environmental comfort, such as acoustics, thermal, lighting, ergonomics, and natural ventilation. The research will evaluate the acoustic quality in four icon, commercial and residential, buildings of the Brazilian Modernist Architecture, located in São Paulo and recognized for their environmentally appropriate approach. These buildings are: Conjunto Nacional (1963), on Avenida Paulista, designed by the architect David Libeskind; Anchieta (1948), also on Avenida Paulista, designed by the MMM Roberto Office; Louveiras (1946), in Higienópolis neighborhood, designed by the architect Vilanova Artigas; and Copan (1966), on Avenida Ipiranga, designed by Oscar Niemeyer and completed by Carlos Alberto Cerqueira Lemos. Acoustic assessments will be conducted inside and outside the buildings, covering both building acoustics and urban acoustics. The methodology will include experimental and qualitative approaches, including field surveys with interviews and measurements, complemented by numerical or predictive methods for a comprehensive analysis. The results obtained will be evaluated and compared with established criteria, and subsequently will be disclosed to the public and interested parties. (AU)
