Abstract

The project presented here is an Action Research and focuses on valuing indigenous cultures in the context of the mediatization of society. The main objective of the research is to understand the uses of the media by the youth and indigenous leaders of the participating peoples, from a dialogic perspective, considering a critical stance on the use of the media and the need for media literacy. In this way, the project is inserted in the field of educommunication.In the case of Sao Paulo, work will be done with residents of villages located in the regions of Bauru and Tupã; more specifically in the Araribá Indigenous Land and the Vanuíre Indigenous Land. In Araribá there are four villages: Kopenoti, Ekeruá, Nimuendaju and Tereguá, where 645 people live (according to data from the 2023 Census) of the Terena, Tupi-Guarani (Ñandeva) ethnic groups, in a territory of 1,930.3369 hectares. The Vanuire territory has 708.9304 hectares, where 239 people live (2023 Census) of the Kaingang, Terena, Krenak, Fulni-ô, Atikum, Kaingang-Krenak ethnic groups.Meanwhile, in the case of the region of La Araucanía, work will be done with indigenous communities in the Truf Truf sector, belonging to the commune of Padre de Las Casas. In the Truf Truf sector there are 97 communities distributed over 9 thousand hectares. The commune of Padre Las Casas has a population projection for 2024 of 85,373 inhabitants and more than 50% corresponds to the Mapuche indigenous population. It should be noted that according to the 2017 Census, in Chile a total of 2,185,792 people consider themselves to belong to an indigenous or original people, of which 1,745,147 correspond to the Mapuche people. The same census indicates that there are 17,574,003 people in Chile, so that the Mapuche population represents 10% of the country's population.The methodological strategies consider the exchange and bibliographic review with emphasis on similar experiences, the collection and comparative analysis of the data obtained during the fieldwork. For this, individual and group interviews will be used as data collection techniques. For its part, the Nvivo software will be used for the analysis of the information obtained, working especially on categories such as worldview, good living, technologies, cultural preservation and community development.In relation to the results, the project seeks to generate a communication process between the participating indigenous communities of Chile and Brazil, contributing to a cultural exchange that allows us to learn about other similar realities, with common communicational challenges; of particular interest is the recovery of the cultural, artistic and heritage memory of the communities. The latter is relevant given that the University of La Frontera establishes in its Mission that: "It recognizes, promotes and incorporates the worldview of the native peoples, and especially, the intercultural relationship with the Mapuche people, promoting respect and equitable development.". On the other hand, São Paulo State University assumes as an important dimension of its Mission: "To generate, disseminate and promote knowledge, contributing to the overcoming of inequalities and for the full exercise of citizenship".This Action Research project is also part of the UN's 2030 Agenda, by incorporating some of the SDGs. In fact, in order to achieve interaction between traditional cultures present in the regions of action of the two universities and their academic communities, workshops will be held on media literacy, screenwriting, audiovisual production, photography and radio, as well as audiovisual exhibitions among young people, leaders and students.Finally, the publication of articles and dossiers in indexed journals, exhibitions of audiovisual productions and photographic exhibitions, as well as dissemination in audiovisual media in both countries are considered.
