Discussion and Planning for the Establishment of Research Cooperation on Methods for Wireless Communications with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Abstract

The main objective of this Visiting Research Award proposal is to leverage the VR's experience and knowledge on the topic of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) to discuss research problems associated with this topic and to develop a joint research proposal to be submitted soon. RIS are a disruptive technological innovation that will be part of the future 6G systems. They are characterized as large metasurfaces that reflect electromagnetic waves, whose reflection characteristics can be controlled and specified from the solution to optimization problems. The goal is to modify the wireless communication channel in order to optimize performance metrics.Dr. Michael Joham is a world-renowned researcher with extensive experience in the area of wireless communications who has contributed significantly to signal processing for future RIS-assisted 6G systems. He has received several awards for his contributions, including the best paper award at ISWCS'2024, held in Rio de Janeiro, for a paper on Decoupling RIS (related to Beyond-Diagonal (BD)-RIS), a new version of these surfaces. On the ITA side, Prof. Bartolomeu and Prof. Felix intend to start a cooperation in wireless communications, and Dr. Joham's interest in this visit is an excellent opportunity to start this process.
