Strengthening policies and instruments for resilience and adaptation to climate change through the sharing of knowledge and practices from a transdisciplinary perspective.

Abstract

Brazilian cities face significant challenges in preparing for the impacts of climate change, which disproportionately affect vulnerable populations and the socio-ecological systems in which they are embedded. Although adaptation policies and instruments exist, the integration of climate resilience and social justice has not yet been fully consolidated. This project aims to bridge knowledge gaps to strengthen climate resilience and adaptation in socio-ecological systems, with a focus on equity and sustainable development. The research will analyze data and case studies in the metropolitan regions of Sorocaba and Baixada Santista, identifying institutional challenges and strategies for the equitable implementation of adaptation practices. Additionally, it will explore how a sustainable future vision can be incorporated into public policies and environmental management, promoting adaptive scenarios tailored to different territorial contexts. The project fosters synthesis science through the review and reanalysis of national and international data, including experiences from the Global South, using transdisciplinary approaches and participatory, community-based methodologies. Collaborative workshops will be conducted with policymakers, academic researchers, and non-academic local actors to integrate scientific knowledge with traditional wisdom, fostering solutions adapted to the realities of the studied territories. The proposal aligns directly with the theme of resilience and adaptation in socio-ecological systems and contributes to strengthening best practices in climate governance by combining synthesis science with decision-making. The integration of diverse disciplines and the use of artificial intelligence will ensure an in-depth and innovative study, supporting the development of more inclusive and effective public policies to promote climate adaptation and justice in Brazil.
