ROCAN6G - Advanced Optical Networks for Cloud and 6G: Building a Connected Future.

Abstract

With the growth of Internet traffic, communication operators need high-capacity, cost-effective, and reliable solutions to meet quality of service (QoS) requirements. The advent of 6G mobile communication networks and the migration of services to the cloud increase this demand which requires an efficient network infrastructure.Elastic optical networks with spatial division multiplexing (SDM-EONs) emerge as a promising solution, offering higher transmission capacity and flexibility in resource allocation. However, the implementation of these networks faces complex challenges, such as optimizing transmission rate, modulation format, quality of transmission (QoT), routing, and fault management. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) promises to optimize the operation of these networks by automating dynamic resource allocation, fault prediction, and route optimization. The development of distributed machine learning solutions at edge devices is also essential for efficient communication in heterogeneous environments. This research project aims to implement mechanisms to enable SDM-EONs using AI and ML, focusing on increasing the core capacity of the Internet in the context of 6G and cloud services. Thus, the crucial problem to be addressed by this research project is to propose solutions that improve the performance of SDM-EONs and edge devices, creating a scalable and robust network infrastructure to meet the growing demands for traffic and services.
