Abstract

The determination of organic substances in water commonly involves the isolation of compounds of interest and subsequent separation through a chromatography technique. "On-line” techniques, which combine the preparation of the sample and the separation/detection in a single analytical montage, are relatively new. The analysis of volatile substances has generally been carried out through the coupling between a sweep technique of the analytes with the help of a gas ("purge"), its imprisonment in an adsorbant ("trap") and subsequent thermal desorption with the introduction of the desorbed analytes into a chromatograph column. This technique, generally called "purge-and-trap", permits many organic pollutants detected at the level of ppt (parts per trillion). For the analysis of semi-volatile compounds, the extraction in solid phase (SPE) is generally preferred in relation to liquid-liquid extraction, given that it offers several benefits such as the use of small quantities of sample, is not very troublesome, uses a small amount of organic solvent, an permits a greater enrichment of the compounds of interest. For the elucidation of the presence of certain pollutants mass spectrometry coupled with chromatographic techniques have been widely used. In the present decade, various interfaces were developed aimed at the "on-line" transference of the organic solvent used to dissolve the analyte of interest in an enrichment cartridge for the gas chromatograph system, permitting the "on-line" SPE-CGC coupling.
