Abstract
The inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)was implemented to determine elements in concentrations at the ng/mL level in agronomic and environmental materials. The technique is characterized by the multielement capability, simple spectra with low background and high sensitivity for most of the elements of interest. The research objectives are: a)to evaluate the capability of ICP-MS for direct determination of trace elements; b) to characterize the main interferences and establish methodology to overcome their problems, either by using the appropriated sample decomposition and preservation procedures or by separating the elements from the sample matrix; c) to develop automated procedures by using flow injection for on-line matrix separation and element pre-concentration and d) to study the electrothermal vaporization of this samples from a tungsten coil furnace coupled to the ICP-MS torch.
