Abstract
The main idea for this project comes from the years of development and involvement associated with the member of this group. During these years, there has been an orderly natural sequence of development in the research accomplished by this group; however, there still remain a number of key gaps and unanswered questions that demand a large focused project such as the one being proposed. This area of research is extremely interesting because of the fact that cereals (the main source of nutrients in the human diet) are poor sources of quality nutrition. This lack of quality is the direct result of the low quantity of lysine and other essential amino acids (for example tryptophan) that are found in the seeds and especially in the endosperm. In general, the project involves the study of the storage proteins of sorghum, maize and barley as well as the characterization of the enzymes that control the metabolism of lysine in maize mutants that are considered to have high lysine levels. The main objectives are to obtain more data regarding lysine metabolism and storage proteins of the different cereals, which will contribute to the future genetic improvements and manipulations, required to increase the protein nutrition of this group of plants.
