The rehabilitation process and interfaces with individuals´ quality of life and culture

Abstract

This thematic project aims at understanding the interfaces between the rehabilitation process, quality of life and culture of individuaIs with a chronic disease or trauma in order to establish action principIes in the fields of health research and care. As researchers, educators, and health care professionals, we have contact with these people during our everyday professional and even personal lives. We have observed that these people, very often, experience unfavorable situations in a society that values good performance in all aspects: physical, psychological, economic and social. In the project that we are now submitting, the populations in focus consist of people undergoing a rehabilitation process from cardiovascular diseases or who have been burned. We intend to analyze the interfaces of the rehabilitation process, the measurements of quality of life and cultural aspects seeking to: -understand what the determinants of quality of life mean to these individuaIs; -understand the cultural meaning of quality of life to the participants in the research; - validate and apply instruments in order to measure the quality of life of these populations aiming at matching of the results obtained through the application of the measurement instruments with the results from the investigation on cultural meanings concerning quality of life, using the data triangulation strategy and, finally, -review the adaptation of the measurement instruments in relation to the results obtained in this study. Due to the complexity of the object of study here in presented, we strategically propose the conduction of the following sub-projects: a) quality of life following coronary artery bypass graft surgery; b) translation intoPortuguese and validation of the Aaron Antonovsky' Sense of Coherence Questionnaire; c) patients' self-esteem following coronary artery bypass graft surgery; d) cultural meaning of quality of life: perspectives of patients after coronary artery bypass graft surgery; e) translation into Portuguese and validation of the instrument "Burns Specific Health Scale-Revised" for burned patients; and t) cultural meaning of quality of life: perspectives of patients who have suffered burns. The methodology consists in the articulation of the qualitative and quantitative approaches... (AU)
