Abstract

The Brazilian electric system is mainly based on hydro generation and long transmission lines. This characteristic makes its operation planning a complex task which includes a long term energetic analysis which manages the reservoirs looking for the optimization of the system hydraulic resources and the compatibilization of the energetic targets with the generation dispatch and the power flow in the electric network. The project aims to develop a suitable operation planning model chain to the Brazilian electric system. With respect ot the Energetic Operation Planning, the project studies the long and mid term reservoirs operation on a monthly and weekly basis focusing on the minimization of the thermoelectric fuel cost while satisfying a given level of supply reliability. The long term operation planning is concerned with the study of models for aggregating the hydroelectric subsystem to allow the use of stochastic dynamic programming as the optimization tool. The mid term planning, on the other hand, studies the use of deterministic optimization models feed by inflow forecasting models in order to obtain the weekly operation targets of each individual plant. With respect to the Electric Operation Planning, the project studies the system operation in a short term basis by disagregating the weekly operation targets on an hourly basis. This disagregation takes into account the hydraulic operational constraints of each plant and the electric constraints of the transmission system. The tools that performs this task are an hourly based hydroelectric plant simulator, AC / DC security constrained optimal power flow algorithms, studies on voltage stability and hydro-electric-energetic coordination methods. The project includes the implementation of a data base for the Brazilian electric system and the development of decision support systems for data management and model integration using friendly man-machine interfaces.
