Polymeric and ceramic materials

Abstract

The main interest of this project is to study two classes of materials: polymers and ceramics, both of fundamental importance for the great part of the human activities nowadays. The diversity and versatility of applications and uses of these materials are due to the variety of their individual properties. In addition, many polymeric materials of technological interest are obtained by the mixture of two or more polymers, and others are obtained by the combination of polymers and fillers, giving rise to polymeric composites. In principle, it is possible to tailor the properties of these materials in function of their nature and composition. The appropriated selection of polymers and fillers can also produce polymeric composites, which by controlled pyrolysis give rise to ceramic composites. In this context, the aim of this project is the development of polymeric blends and composites and also ceramic composites. The structural, thermal, mechanical and morphological characterization of these materials is of fundamental importance to the evaluation of miscibility and compatibility in polymeric blends and composites. These aspects will be emphasized in all the sub-projects related to polymers. The characterization of ceramic matrix composites will be similar, emphasizing the distribution and nature of disperse phases. The results obtained in these studies should allow to establishing relationships among structure and composition of materials with their properties. With this knowledge the team will be able to optimize the performance of the systems to produce polymeric and ceramic materials of interest to the market. (AU)
