Abstract

The general objective of the project is the influence of the Estuary Complex of the Baixada Santista on the Ecosystem of the adjacent Platform (ECOSAN) and to evaluate the influence of the estuary complex of the Baixada Santista on the continental platform situated between Itanhaém and São Sebastião, studying the load of organic and inorganic material carried, the physical mechanisms which permit the carrying and deposition of this material and the impact of this flow of material on the biological processes and the structure of the region's ecosystem. In this patently multidisciplinary project, specialists from several areas of Oceanography are active, such as physicists, biologists, geologists, chemists, and engineers. The focus of ECOSAN is the study of a process: the penetration of waters coming from the estuary complex of the Baixada Santista on the continental platform and its consequences: the study of the ecosystem, in short. The estuary waters bring nutrients and contaminants of the most diverse kinds onto the platform. The load varies temporarily on several scales. (AU)
