New materials and methods applied to (bio) medicine

Abstract

In the present proposal three different sensors are developed which are especially useful to physicians as well as to biomedical researchers. In the first, the goal is to make a dosimeter based on the ionizing radiation induced modifications in the electronic properties of conjugated polymers, with special emphasis on poly (piphenilenevinilene). In this sub-project the new dosimeter is proposed to be read using spectrometric techniques and to be used in medical applications such as radiotherapy as well as in the food industry. In the second, a solid state sensor for NO is proposed using an iron-ditiocarbamate complex encapsulated inside a solid matrix with characteristics such as porosity transparency in the UV-VIS and free of electron spin resonance signal. In the third, a miniature dosimeter is developed based on an agglomerate of alanine and a polymer. The mini-dosimeter is intended to be used in small field dosimetry such as: conformal radiotherapy, IMRT, gamma knife, radio surgery with fixed terciary collimators, as well in braquiterapy (small and high dose rates).
