The goal of this project is the development of algorithms, mathematical techniques, and software tools for problems in visual computing, based on concepts of mathematical approximation. Visual computing includes computational geometry, geometric modeling, image synthesis and animation, scientific visualization, image encoding and processing, and pattern recognition. By mathematical approximation we understand the replacement of a physical phenomenon or mathematical model by a simpler or more efficient model, with theoretical or experimental guarantees about the errors due to this substitution. The specific sub-items of this project reflect the accumulated experience and original ideas of the project members in the above areas, and will provide many opportunities for synergy and cooperation.
