Evaluation of periodontal disease correlation with vascular cerebral accident (VCA) by the identification and quantification of A.a. and P.g. by coventional PCR and Real Time-PCR

Abstract

Recently, many studies described in the literature have demonstrated the influence of periodontal disease in others systemic conditions, such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease and preterm low birth weight. Beside those conditions, it has recently been proposed that periodontal disease could influence the development of cerebral stroke. As so, the aim of this study is to investigate the possible influence of periodontal disease in the occurrence of vascular cerebral accidents (VCAs). A total of 120 patients, both gender, aged between 40 and 60 years old will be selected. The experimental group will be composed by 30 hospitalized patients presenting VCA. The experimental group will be composed by 90 ambulatory patients not presenting signs and symptoms or family history of VCAs. A health questionnaire investigating the possible causes of vascular cerebral accidents and other systemic conditions will be applied to all patients. Both groups will be periodontally evaluated according to probing depth measure, bleeding on probing and plaque index. In order to identify and quantify the periodontopathic bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis and Actinobacillus actinomycetencomitans in both groups, a sample of subgingival plaque will be collected from the two deepest sites of all patients by the introduction of a sterilized paper strip. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of subgingival microbiota will be performed by conventional PCR and Real Time PCR. Data will be analysed by logistic regression analysis and Pearson’s correlation test to evaluate the correlation of the different periodontal clinical parameters with VCA, with a 95% confidence level. Additionally, the periodontal conditions of both groups and the conventional PCR and Real Time PCR results will be analysed by chi-squared test and t test. (AU)
