Abstract

Articular cartilage function depends on chondrocyte and its extra cellular matrix components, which can be regulated through mechanic stimuli. Investigation of articular cartilage components as matrix collagen and non-collagen proteins and chondrocyte are necessary to prevent and treat articular diseases. Ciclic muscle stretch protocol, applied by the present group (Renner et al, 2006), in mice ankles previously immobilized caused articular cartilage damage when applied 7 days a week. However the effect of this long time protocol still unclear, when removing stimuli. Collagen quantity, orientation or type alteration can indicate damage perpetuation through biomechanical quality loss. In this manner, it is necessary to investigate collagen response when submitted to this therapeutic method and to establish a non-damage therapeutic parameter of muscle stretching. The objective of this study is to evaluate orientation and collagen type expression when applied immobilization, immobilization and stretching and solely stretching (3 and 7 days a week) and evaluate proteoglycan, chondrocyte and cartilage thickness response applying a 3-day week protocol. For this it will be used: H&E, Safranin-O fast green, Picrosirius Red and Anticollagen I and II. (AU)
