Study of chemical composition and antifungal activity of Plinia cauliflora (Mart.) Kausel (Myrtaceae)

Abstract

The yeasts of Candida genus are frequent cause of infection of the oral and vaginal mucosa, and recently, have been cause of apprehension in the area of Human health due to re-incidence of the infections, increase of systemic infections in immune compromised patients and resistance of diverse strains contrasting with the high toxicity of the synthesized antifungal agents. There are studies of the effectiveness of the use of medicinal plants in the treatment of candidiasis, as well as studies that demonstrate this activity by means of extracts, essential oils and secondary metabolites isolated of some plants. However, it must be salient that pharmaceutical preparations with natural actives efficient for human and animal use have not been described. The plants produce active compounds against yeasts and taking in consideration factors as resistance of the antifungal agents and their toxicity, it becomes extremely important not only the study of new actives against Candida spp, but also the verification of the mechanism of action of these compounds and the evaluation of their cytotoxicity for the development of products that can be used in cases of dermal infections of mucosa or systemic infections. The project searches to evaluate the phytochemical composition of the essential oil and the extract of Plinia cauliflora (Myrtaceae), through standardized methodologies, besides verifying the action mechanism on different species of Candida, using proteomic tools. This investigation is part of a project of Doctor degree of a student from the course of "Pós-graduação em Ciências Farmacêuticas" at "Faculdade de Ciências Farmacêuticas de Araraquara", under my supervision. This study will make possible the incorporation of these natural actives in future safe pharmaceutical preparations, that come to contribute in the combat to the transmission and infections caused for Candida spp, based in the evaluation of the cytotoxicity of the actives.
