Abstract
Strength training (ST) combined with vascular occlusion (STVO) has been proposed as a new paradigm to improve strength and increase in muscle mass. Recent studies have shown that low intensity (20-50% 1RM) STVO results similar hypertrophy and enhancement in strength performance when compared to high intensity (80% 1RM) ST. However, the mechanisms behind such effects are still unclear. One possible explanation is the elevation in plasma concentration of growth hormone, testosterone, IGF-1 and cortisol due to the hypoxic condition caused by vascular occlusion. The first three hormones contribute to protein synthesis. Nevertheless, increases in muscle mass are determined by a balance between protein synthesis and degradation. Thus, not only stimulation of synthesis pathways but a greater inhibition of degradation pathways are important to increase muscle mass. Myostatin is a muscle mass down regulator and up to date the effects of STVO on its activity are unknown. Therefore, the objective of this study will be to investigate functional and morphological adaptations, changes in hormonal plasma concentration and changes in myostatin gene expression due to 8 weeks of ST and STOV.
