Genetic studies of the Sporosorium scitamineum, the causal agent of sugarcane smut

Abstract

Sugar cane cultivated in Brazil has been receiving significant attention due to the increasing use of renewable sources of fuels such as ethanol. Therefore, aspects related to biomass production are relevant to allow advances in bioenergy research. Among sugarcane production limiting factors are the severity of some diseases which usually requires resistance of cultivated varieties or a quick exchange of susceptible cultivars before making ratoon crops unprofitable. Sugarcane producers in Brazil have reported 40 out of the 177 diseases provoked by fungi, bacteria, virus and mycoplasma detected around the world. The four most important are: smut, ratton stunting disease, mosaic and leaf scald. This project is concerned with smut caused by Sporosorium scitamineum. The objectives are to access genetic diversity among isolated fungus of infected plants located in different regions of Brazil developing a telomeric fingerprinting tool and to perform a characterization of subtelomeric regions regarding gene content.
