Abstract

The Permian-Triassic interval witnessed the most severe biotic crisis of the entire Phanerozoic, and the study of Brazilian sedimentary sequences may shed light into important facets of this vital moment in the history of Earth. The most fossilifeous Brazilian deposits of Late Permian and Triassic age were formed in the context of the Paraná and Parnaíba basins. These rocks are especially common in southern São Paulo and northern Paraná states, in the "Depressão Central" of Rio Grande do Sul, as well as in a belt extending from northern Tocantins along the boundary between the states of Maranhão and Piauí. This Project attempts to explore those areas in search for fossil vertebrates, as well as to conduct revision studies (anatomy and systematics) on certain Permian-Triassic taxa from Brazil and other parts of the world. Studies on the phylogeny and evolution of land tetrapods (e.g., temnospondyls, dinosaurs, rynchosaurs, rauisuchians), will be emphasized. More comprehensive goals comprise: the search for Roadian age deposits, in an effort to fulfill the so-called "Olson's Gap"; the establishment of a more reliable basis for stratigraphic correlation among Permian-Triassic deposits of Brazil and other parts of Pangea; and a better understanding of the Permian-Triassic boundary in the Paraná and Parnaíba basins. Finally, results from the above mentioned investigations will be integrated into a Relational Database; in an attempt to identity global macroevolutionary patterns common to the Brazilian Permian-Triassic biota.
