Abstract

Electron spin resonance (ESR) is a versatile spectroscopic technique for the study of different materials. This project is focused, but not limited to, on the ESR applications for ionizing radiation dosimetry, dating and biomaterials characterization. ESR dosimetry and dating are relatively new areas of application with many open questions that will be addressed by the present research. New methods and approaches will be studied to broaden the applications and to characterize biomaterials. The ESR dosimetry and dating experiments are based in the detection of a signal, stable or with low fading, sensitive to the ionizing radiation. Hard tissues such as bone and tooth enamel as well as minerals had been used for this purpose. However in case of radiological accidents it would be desirable to study alternative materials such as nail and hair. In this case the radicals created by ionizing radiation are not stable and several procedures must be taken to assure the detection of the signal and to infer the actual exposition dose. In another application ST-ESR spectra will be studied to reveal the spectral characteristics associated with the ionizing radiation. (AU)
