Abstract

The medical formation has been intensively discussed due to the increase in medical institutions number and the need of social control of the graduating professional. These factors , together with the globalization effect over society, raise the need of a broad evaluation of the profile of the physician graduated as it was done in the 1970s. In 2007, the Medical School of Ribeirao Preto of the University of Sao Paulo has completed 55 years of existence and is a very good example for this kind of evaluation, since it has already graduated over 4,400 physicians, underwent through curricular re-evaluation and has participated in several social transformations, such as adhering to the public health system and the introduction of residency programs.Goals: 1. To evaluate the profile of the physicians graduated from the MSRP-USP each 5 years from graduation. 2. To evaluate the impact of curricular reformulation and residency over this profile after adjusting for confounding variables. 3. To build a up-to-date database to help in further research. Methods: In person or telephonic systematized interviews will be conduct by trainned interviewers. The information will be stored in a database developed for the study, allowing management and data analysis. Inter-observer variability and the validity of the questionnaire will be evaluated in a pilot study. The MSRP-USP documentation, graduating comissions and the world wide web resources will be used to identify the participants. The study protocol will be submitted to the local Ethical committee. Data analysis: All the population will be searched, from the 1st to the 51st graduation groups. We assume a 20% loss due to impossibility to contact - death. Multiple linear or logistical regression will be utilized for data analysis as indicated. The statiscial models will be adjusted for demographic, socio-economic and type of professional activity.
