Factors associated with acquiring methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in newborns

Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine factors that are associated with the acquisition of MRSA by newborns in a neonatal unit. Also the study will include an evaluation of antimicrobial susceptibility, virulence genes and molecular typing (to evaluate clonality). Four hundred newborns will be evaluated with surveillance cultures (nares, umbilicum, perineum and oral) within 6 hours of birth, on 3rd day and weekly until 4 weeks or discharge from the hospital. Their mothers will be cultured on the day of delivery (nares, oral, perineum and anal). Healthcare workers will be cultured at the beginning and the end of the study. A description of the characteristics of the patients colonized by MRSA and a comparative analysis with non-colonized neoborns will be done to determine factors associated with colonization of the newborns.
