Abstract

The crescent development, both industrial and social, has led to a considerable increase in the residue production. Among the ecosystems, the aquatic is, perhaps, the one of major concern, considering the final destiny of all the pollutants. Several studies have suggested a direct correlation between the mutagenicity and the level of certain pollutants present in the water. In this way, the present project has the objective to verify the possible genotoxic and mutagenic potentials of contaminants present in waters of rivers that receive industrial and urban effluents of a highly industrialized region of the São Paulo State and of chemicals potentially harmful, by means of simulation carried out in laboratory. For this evaluation it will be used chromosome aberration and micronucleus tests in Allium cepa, comet assay and nuclear abnormalities in Oreochromis niloticus and comet assay and micronucleus test in mammal cells, in vitro. It is expected that the obtained results can contribute for a better knowledgment of the interactions existent between the toxicity of the products present in the water and that can cause damages to the exposed organisms.
