Abstract

The demand for dyes in pharmaceutical, cosmetic or food industries is very high. The low cost, easy availability and high diversity of colors and shades of synthetic dyes attract the industrial market, however, several of these compounds present inherent toxicity, and many are precursors of toxic intermediates and/or mutagens produced during metabolism in the body. Thus, natural dyes obtained by the fermentation processes of micro-organisms are alternatives for the substitution of synthetic dyes in some applications, it also has low cost, and requires little space for the large-scale production, increasing the economic viability for industrial use. Moreover, the use of natural dyes can add nutritional value to the final product. Many phenolic compounds extract from micro-organisms are potential natural dyes and have antioxidant activity due to the number of conjugated double bonds in the molecule. Thus, the present work aims to study the natural dye eritrostominona extracted from micro-organism by the protection against oxidative stress, mutagenic, genotoxic and cytotoxic potential, and evaluate its ecotoxicity. Tests of oxidative stress will be conducted in liver mitochondria of rats Wistar to investigate the antioxidant potential of the dye. The toxicological tests will be conducted in hepatocytes and equivalent human epidermis, by MTT test, to check the cytotoxicity of the compound, comet assay to verify genotoxicity, and micronucleus assay to verify mutagenicity. The ecotoxicity tests will be evaluated by acute and chronic toxicity to aquatic non-target organisms Daphnia sp. and zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos.
