Effects of cold plastic deformation on precipitation of stable and metastable phases in beta type titanium alloys

Abstract

Microstructures and hence mechanical behavior of titanium alloys directly depend on the amount of alloying elements and the applied processing route. In general, these microstructures are formed by stable alpha and beta phases and eventually, by metastable phases, mainly in beta type titanium alloys, which are obtained by the addition of elements like Nb. The aim of this work is to contribute to the development of new titanium alloys to be applied in orthopedic implants. Also, this work includes investigation of recrystallization and phase precipitation in plastic deformed samples submitted to heat treatments. Ti-Nb samples will be prepared in a arc melting furnace and homogenized at high temperatures. Following, samples will be quenched to obtain microstructures formed by beta and orthorhombic martensite phases. In the sequence, those samples will follow processing routes that allows one to evaluate the effect of heat treatments on the recrystalization and precipitation of beta, omega and alpha phases and also, changes in the mechanical behavior.
