Abstract

A poor oral health status, represented by tooth loss, imposes important modifications in food choice by the elderly. It promotes food avoidance, specially the intake of high nutritional value food and, in some cases, the selection of food with inadequate energy value and easy to chew/swallow, inducing them to underweight, overweight and obesity. Because of the absence of further information about the relationship between oral status and nutrition, the aim of the present study is to evaluate whether poor oral health status might be a contributing factor to the development of risk of malnutrition assessed by the body mass index (BMI) in older adults, considering the physical activity and frailty in Campinas city, São Paulo. This project will use data based on the already collected one by the populational, multicentric and multidisciplinary study promoted by Rede de Pesquisa sobre Fragilidade em Idosos Brasileiros (Rede FIBRA) during the period of 2008 / 2009. 601 older adults, men and women had been analyzed, without distinction of sort, residents in the community, of the city of Campinas. The variables of interest of socio-demographic nature, oral health/status, access to oral health services, physical activity, frailty and body mass index data had been collected. Multivariate logistic regression will be used to model the relationship between the underweight and overweight/ obesity and the variables. All the analyses will be accomplished by the SPSS XX program (SPSS inc., Chicago, USA). (AU)
