Characterization of the magnetostriction of cobalt ferrites

Abstract

Literature has shown that magnetic ceramics, specifically cobalt ferrites, are applicable in sensors that are based on the magnetostriction and magnetoelastic effects underwent by such materials. Compared to other materials employed in such magnetomechanical sensors, such as Terfenol and other iron-rare earth compounds, ferrites present the advantage of lower cost and higher corrosion resistance. The aim of this work is to propose a processing route for some cobalt ferrites, with potential use in magnetomechanical sensors for aerospace applications, so as to densify these ceramics using sintering temperatures lower than usual. Mn-doped and undoped Co ferrites, as well as Co-doped Ni ferrites, will be processed by means of the conventional ceramic method. CuO additions will be made in order to reduce the sintering temperature. The ferrites will be characterized by means of the following methods: Archimedes method for evaluation of density, light and/or scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, assessment of magnetic hysteresis loops, and magnetostriction measurements. For financing the project, a R$ 37,306.00 amount is requested. The expected results are: consolidation of the partnership between USP-EEL and IEAv in the subject of electromagnetic characterization of materials; improvement of IEAv's human resources, by means of practice in characterization methods not available in the institute; attainment of cobalt ferrites for magnetomechanical sensors used in aerospace applications; contribution to the development of undergraduate, Master, and Ph.D. students.
