Abstract
The Beck Depression Inventory allows detecting the presence of depressive symptoms in the general population and can facilitate referring the cases of "depression" to adequate treatment. Nevertheless, in order to secure the validity of the results in our context, validation studies are needed to describe its psychometric performance. Objectives: To validate the Portuguese version of the self-reporting scale Beck Depression Inventory-version-II (BDI-II: Inventário de Depressão de Beck II), throughout the investigation of its psychometric properties among non-clinical samples of Brazilian adult population. Methods: The Brazilian Portuguese version of BDI-II was translated from the original version in English and back-translated to English by native speakers, in accordance to international norms. The following procedures will be carried out: 1. Administration of the BDI-II to College students (N=60) to determine its test-retest reliability, and to calculate the internal consistency of items; 2. Administration of the BDI-II to Brazilian general population (N=200), para estimate criterion indicators - as sensitivity and specificity - through the comparison with "Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorder" (SCID-I). 3. Simultaneous administration of the BDI-II with other psychometric tools to demonstrate its concurrent validity in relation with following instruments: Self-Report Questionnaire (SRQ-20), Scale K10, Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), Hamilton's Anxiety Scale (HAM-A), Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ), and Hypomania Check-list (HCL-32). 4. Administration of the BDI-II to a representative sample of College students from a University (N=3,000) to estimate the factorial structure of the tool. Statistical analysis: To determine the instrument's reliability, descriptive analysis of the scores of the BDI-II for the above mentioned populations, internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha method), and intraclasse correlation will be calculated. Taking the SCID-I as gold-standard, the criterion indicators will be calculated: sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and the rate of misclassification. The best cutoff point will be determined by the Receiver Operating Characteristics curve analysis. Bivariate correlation between BDI-II and the simultaneously administered instruments will check the overlap of constructs under investigation. To estimate the latent structure of the BDI-II, data of College students will be subjected to Exploratory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis. (AU)
