Identification and characterization of differentially expressed genes during the interaction between Methylobacterium mesophilicum and the host plant

Abstract

The genus Methylobacterium is composed by Pink Pigmented, Facultative Methylotrophic bacteria (PPFMs), which in some case may colonize endophytically the host plant. Some species of this genus are able to promote plant growth, increase the photosynthetic activity of the host plant and reduce the incidence of pathogens. However, little is known about which genes of Methylobacterium spp. may be involved with the interaction endophyte - host plant. The strain SR1.6 / 6 of M. mesophilicum is a bacterium obtained from citrus that has interaction with Xylella fastidiosa, and has been the subject of many researches about bacteria-plant interaction. Thus, this study aims to sequence the genome of M. mesophilicum and identify genes differentially expressed (transcriptome) during host plant association. Moreover, since other species of Methylobacterium have been sequenced, we will be able to compare the genome of endophytic species (M. nodulans and M. mesophilicum) and non-endophytic (M. chloromethanicum, M. populi and M. radiotolerans). Finally, this study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the interaction endophyte - plant host using the description and quantification of potential differentially expressed genes related to interaction and also, elucidate the strategies used by bacteria for colonization of the plant. This understanding will help in future studies using this interaction in agricultural production, contributing to increased resistance to pathogens and increased plant growth. (AU)
