Isolation and characterization of Trypanosoma cruzi strains from wild triatomines captured in the region of the city of Marília

Abstract

The natural American trypanosomiasis transmission spreads over an area comprising the south of the United States until the province of Chubut in Argentina, though the triatomids presence isn't restricted to the American continent. Today more than 137 triatomine species are known and although all species are potentially Trypanosoma cruzi transmitters, only a few are important in public health due to anthropophilic habits and domiciliation. Due to the vast area considered as an endemic in Brazil, in 1975 the vector transmission control program was started throughout the country whose target was the Triatoma infestans. Nowadays there are some residual focuses of this triatomine in the west of the state of Bahia and north-west of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. In the region of the city of Marília 122 triatomine notifications occured in last six years, where T. sordida was the specie most found. Recent studies accomplished during 1990 to 2006 in 645 cities in the state of São Paulo showed an increase of triatomine infestations of 1.2% in 1990 to 2.9% in 2006, where the northwest region showed the greater expansion. Thus, the search of wild triatomines has become important in order to know the real situation of the T. cruzi in the wild cycle. (AU)
