Chagas disease is a parasitic infection caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. It is known as one of the neglected tropical diseases, which usually affects people living in rural areas and with low socioeconomic status. Among the ways of transmission, the most well-kwon are: vector, oral, transfusional, congenital and by a laboratory accident. It is currently estimated that exists eight million people infected with Trypanosoma cruzi in the world. In Brazil, between 2014 and 2017, there were 1,194 cases registered mainly in the North region by oral transmission. The vectors of American trypanosomiasis are the triatomines. There are currently 19 genres and 154 species of triatomines and the main transmitters belong to Panstrongylys, Rhodnius, and Triatoma genres. The populations of T. cruzi has great variability in the morphology, virulence, pathogenicity, evasion to the host immune system and in the antigenic constitution. This variability is associated with the different forms of clinical manifestation of the disease in man. This study aims at the biological and molecular characterization of two strains of T. cruzi (Tsh 4 and Tsh 18), isolated from feces of nymphs and adults of Triatoma sherlock, captured in the district of Santo Inácio, municipality of Gentio do Ouro, in the state of Bahia. The biological characterization will be performed by the analysis of the infection behavior in BALB/c mice and for the molecular characterization will be used 24S± sequences of ribosomal RNA, HSP60, and GPI.
