Calcium and phosphorus determination on enamel submitted to home-use and in-office bleaching treatments: an in vivo study

Abstract

The adverse effects of bleaching treatments on dental tissues are known and related in literature. The constant creation of new techniques and formulas of bleaching agents makes necessary the development of studies that may evaluate, faithfully, the effects on dental tissues as in an in vivo study. Therefore, the aim of this in vivo study is to determine the changes in calcium and phosphorus concentration of human enamel submitted to home-use and in-office bleaching treatments in different concentrations. Four treatment agents will be evaluated: 38% hydrogen peroxide (Opalescence Xtra Boost, Ultradent), 35% hydrogen peroxide (Pola Office, SDI), 10% carbamide peroxide (Opalescence PF, Ultradent) and 20% carbamide peroxide (Opalescence PF, Ultradent), in a total of four study groups (n=20). The treatment protocol of bleaching agents will be done according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Eighty volunteers will be submitted to bleaching treatments and the enamel biopsy technique will be performed on their premolars, at times: baseline, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days. The control values will be obtained, in each patient, through samples on baseline, before the beginning of the bleaching treatment. The analysis of calcium and phosphorus of the samples will be performed with absorbance readings that will be determined with ELISA microplate reader. The results will be submitted to statistical analysis to evaluate possible differences in mineral concentrations in function of timespan studies and the different concentrations used in this study.
