In situ degradability and ruminal parameters of hay Arachis pintoi cv. Belmonte in sheep

Abstract

The legume Arachis pintoi is a native species of the Cerrado of Brazil, which has excellent adaptation to acid soils with low fertility, high forage production and high capacity for nitrogen fixation and shade tolerance. To produce good quality forage is increasing its use in replacement of commercial foods to supplement animal, and can be used for direct grazing or as hay or silage. In Brazil, the potential of legumes and sheep production, makes important the study of digestive traits of these plants. Data obtained by in vitro methods may not be the most suitable for use in feed formulation, therefore the values obtained with animals have more relevance to the balance of the diets. Currently there is little information regarding the conduct with arachis rumen metabolism, and data such as degradation of dry matter, protein, production of ammonia and volatile fatty acids from the rumen are important in the study of characterization and utilization of food for ruminants. This study aims to evaluate the hay Arachis pintoi cv. Belmonte by food consumption, production of VFA, N-NH3 concentration and pH of rumen fluid, in situ degradability of DM, NDF and CP of the hay, in vitro digestibility of dry matter of hays. Expected to find in the hay arachis nutritional values comparable or superior to other legumes as well as effective use of nutrients, since this legume has no toxic factors that affect or limit its use by raising the importance of using the same in ruminant feed.
