Abstract

The sugarcane crop is of extreme economical importance in Brazil and it is continuously confronted with diverse potential pathogens and stress conditions within its environment. Disease resistence and survival at unfavorable environment conditions revealing that the sugarcane plants must have evolved highly efficient defense systems. Here we present our data mining results during the Sugarcane EST Genome Project. Adopting a sequencing of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) deriving from libraries induced and not induced by pathogens, we identified EST clusters homologues to plant-signaling molecules, phytoalexins and lignin biosynthesis, PR-proteins and genes corresponding to enzymes involved in detoxification of reactive oxygen species. We also present general considerations about the mechanims of sugarcane defense against biotic and abiotic stresses. This information is of extreme value for future sugarcane breeding programs with goals related to the development of plants with enhanced resistance against pathogens. (AU)
