Abstract

The hypertension is a systemic condition highly prevalent in world's population. It is also an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The inflammatory response may be involved in the hypertension pathogenesis by the action of pro-inflammatory mediators associated with the endothelial dysfunction and increased arterial stiffness. It was demonstrated an association between the severity of periodontal disease (PD) and hypertension (Angeli et al. 2003, Leite et al. 2005, Holmund et al. 2006) and also a relationship between the calcium metabolism changes and loss of bone mineral density in hypertensive individuals (Izawa et al. 1985; Cappuccio et al. 1999). However, the influences of hypertension in PD and bone repair are still under investigation. Considering the importance of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the pathogenesis of PD and hypertension, recent studies have been focusing on the effect of host modulating agents in the treatment of these diseases (Pinho et al. 2008; Kirkwood et al. 2007; Queiroz et al. 2008; O`Connell et al. 2008; Vaughan et al. 1996, Liao & Laufs 2005). The effects of host response modulators, such as rosuvastatin and sub-antimicrobial dose of doxycycline, have been investigated in clinical studies but the mechanism of action of these drugs on periodontal disease progression and bone repair is of current interest. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate: i) the effects of hypertension in periodontal disease progression and bone repair and ii) the effects of host modulating agents in the progression of periodontal disease and bone repair using a hypertensive rat model of experimental periodontitis.
