Abstract

Presently all domestic waste from the cities of Vale do Paraiba, including Cachoeira Paulista, Lorena, Guaratinguetá and Cruzeiro is deposited on sanitary landfills in Cachoeira Paulista without any previous separation or treatment. Recalcitrant products (leachate) undergo no physical or chemical treatment and percolate directly through the landfill, consequently, polluting the surrounding environment. Global standards demand recalcitrant residues treatments, in this case, leachate, providing methodologies that facilitate processes of degradation with subsequent biological and activated soils processes for both toxic products and non-toxic by-products. The aim of this work is to treat in natura the sanitary landfill leachate at Cachoeira Paulista using the processes of UVsolar/H2O2, UVsolar/Fenton, UVlamp/H2O2, UVlamp/Fenton, UVsolar/TiO2 and UVsolar/ZnO in a semi-batch system. For evaluation purposes, a fractional factorial experimental design 2k-p during the stage of exploratory study will be employed on each advanced oxidation process; and the Compound Central Planning - CCD, based on this study, will involve the most important parameters of selective oxidation processes in order to improve the optimization of the process conditions used in the Response Surface Methodology. Experimental treatments for different kinds of leachate will determine the concentration of total organic carbon (TOC) and the relation of DBO/DQO response factors. All parameters defined in CETESB Article 18 will be measured as part of the optimization process for discharges of surface water (river). At the end of the project, we recommend an optimized methodology based on costs and benefits from among the leachate oxidation processes at Cachoeira Paulista. (AU)
