Abstract

Landfill leachate presents very little amount of easily biodegradable organic matter and high ammonia concentration. Such characteristics make unfavorable the use of conventional biological processes for nitrogen removal, because they require intensive aeration for nitrification and the addition of large amounts of electron donor for denitrification. For these reasons, there is a need to investigate the applicability of new processes for landfill leachate treatment. Currently, the anaerobic oxidation of ammonia (anammox) has been intensively investigated. This process is favored if the wastewater contains low amount of easily biodegradable organic matter and high ammonia concentration. Therefore, landfill leachate has some characteristics that make it amenable to anammox. On the other hand, as its composition varies from one site to another and the leachate may contain anammox inhibitors, treatability studies are required. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of the anammox process in treating the leachate from a mature landfill that presents very low amount of organic matter. Treatability studies comprise batch experiments using 250mL containing 10 mL of anammox biomass and 90 mL of leachate at different dilution rates. Influent concentrations will be defined in Santiago de Compostela in order to simulate the leachate that is being studied here in São Carlos at the Laboratory of Biological Processes (LPB). (AU)
