Abstract

Leishmaniasis is a geographically widespread severe disease, with a increasing incidence of two million cases per year and 350 million people at risck. The causative agents are species of Leishmania, a protozoan flagellate. Visceral leishmaniasis, the most severe form of disease, lethal if untreated, is caused by species of the Leishmania donovani complex. Is a zoonotic disease and the domestic dogs and Lutzomyia longipalpis are the primary reservoir and vector in New World, respectively. Is not yet clear the role of wild mammals in the cycle. Through molecular markers was shown a biogeographic pattern in samples from biogeography, and general epidemiological characteristics and the relationship between vertebrate and invertebrate hosts generating data for understanding the evolutionary history of this parasite in the New world. The samples will be collected in different areas of Atlantic Forest, Pantanal, Amazon and Caatinga at different time of the year. In each area will be trapped domestic dogs and sylvatic animals (rodents, marsupials and bats) and obtained blood samples for the isolation and molecular characterization through traditional and new phylogenetic markers (SSU rDNA, ITS1 and ITS2 rDNA, cytochrome b, gGAPDH, cathepsin L-like, gp63, histone H2A, elongation factor 1α. and heat-shock protein) and population polymorphic markers (RAPD and microsatellites ).
